Reporter: Associated Press

Monday, May 21, 2012

A prison company says the man killed during a riot was a 24-year-old senior correctional officer at a facility that houses illegal immigrants in southwest Mississippi.

Corrections Corporation of America said on its website that the guard was Catlin Carithers, who joined CCA in 2009.

As many as 300 inmates rioted at the privately run prison for illegal immigrants. A sheriff says the inmates beat a guard to death and injured 16 others. Three inmates were also hurt.

Adams County Sheriff Chuck Mayfield says gang activity sparked the riot.

Corrections Corporation of American is one of the nation's largest private prison companies. It is based in Nashville, Tenn.
