The American Red Cross Midway-Kansas Chapter is receiving a $30,000 donation from Spirit AeroSystems and its employees to support disaster relief after a devastating EF-3 tornado destroyed parts of south Wichita.
“Even as it rebuilds from its own damages after the storm, Spirit AeroSystems once again has shown its priority to help Kansans in their time of greatest need,” said Bev Morlan, American Red Cross Midway-Kansas Chapter executive director. “Thank you to Spirit on behalf of everyone Red Cross has helped.”
$15,000 was contributed by Spirit’s employee-run nonprofit Good Neighbor Fund, which facilitates Spirit employees’ efforts to contribute monetarily to their communities. The organization regularly contributes countless hours of volunteerism and helps local organizations with other community events. Spirit matched the employee’s gift with another $15,000 grant for disaster relief.
Since the disaster, Red Cross has provided 12,346 meals and snacks, distributed 1,411 clean-up and hygiene products, given 111 overnight stays, and helped nearly 100 families with client casework and recovery counseling. None of it could be provided without donations from organizations like Spirit.
“When disasters happen, it’s essential that Red Cross has volunteers and funds ready to respond,” Morlan said. “Community partners like Spirit are vital to the ongoing health and well being of communities like Wichita.”
