Mother Accused Of Taking Punishment Too Far

A Wichita mother is facing criminal charges that accuse her of taking a punishment too far. Among the accusations, she is accused of starving her son. On Friday, she made her first appearance in court.

Darlene Baker faces child abuse, aggravated battery and kidnapping charges. In this case, kidnapping is defined as confining a person through force or threat.

The charges against the 43-year-old allege she forcibly kept a 13-year-old boy confined with the intent to commit child abuse. According to court documents, the abuse happened during a four-month period from the beginning of last December to March of this year.

A police report made on March 16 shows Baker kept her son in his room in their apartment on East Harry in southeast Wichita and did not feed him as a form of discipline. Baker was arrested and now faces charges of kidnapping, child abuse, and aggravated battery.

Darlene Baker's bond was set at $100,000, although if released, she is not allowed to have contact with the victim. Baker's next court date is set for later this month. Based on the severity of the charges against her, if convicted, she will face prison time.
