Storm chasers should start calling in complaints when they see LEOs breaking traffic laws!!! Those complaints will add up fast :) Drive through Wichita, KS & watch how many cops turn without signaling, blatantly speed or do U-turns!!! Cliff, nobody said "car mounted radar". Nowadays, if you're willing to pay the fees, there are some great apps/websites with live radar available.

This is a waste of breath. Anyone can drive wherever they won't. However, they aren't above the law and if they're violating laws they probably will be stopped. That's what Troopers are taught and paid to do right? All we need in an unstable situation is more people out adding to the chaos.

Maybe you should have spent those 25 years in school learning proper grammar and learning how to spell??

I agree, thanks for helping your EM

no, the material changes each year. also there is another advanced course. I report to the county emergency management and then to the nws. I dont report to tv or radio stations, although they may listen to my radio conversations. who do you think the county sends out for damage asessments? chasers from who knows where, with questionable credentials? or trained emergency preparadness people?

Times have changed from 10, 20 or 30 years ago. Definitely a higher population and many more bodies in the same amount of space. Just not the same amount of elbow room and "open spaces" as there used to be. Just a matter of time before everything became so congested. Even chasing weather.

what were the tickets issued? this information was left out of the artical. why were they stopped? were they warned of something? just saying they were harassed is not really saying anything, except whining. how about some facts.

Law Enforcement and other authorized spotters are coordinated by superior people operating advanced radar and transmitting that information to those in the field. maybe he should report to the local agency for the area he is in enable a faster warning instead of the TV camera.

car mounted radar is illeagal. the one in this area that had a radar (marine radar on his truck) had to get rid of it, it was interfearing with the mobile dopler the nws was using.

Wow...I just can't believe the hate in here for chasers, or Lanny Dean in particular. Lanny is one of the few chasers that have the ability to speak out as public as he has. He is a "Chaser" for this very station. Many of you have heard Lanny's voice as a tornado was approaching a town/city in Kansas. With that said...is there an issue with chasers? Sure. But its the pure volume of people that are chasing today compared to 5-10 years ago. When there used to be only 20-30 people out in the midwest on a certain day...there is not 500-1000. If there are only a couple of decent cells firing, then we have the traffic issues. Not sure what can be done about it other than ticket the ones that really deserve it and hope that the recent fad of chasing dies down in the next few years. BTW? Where was Lanny Dean after the April 14th Tors? He was in Woodward Ok with his tour group for a few days volunteering to help with recovery efforts. How many of you went down to Oaklawn to help? Now how many of you went there to take pictures?

This is what angers me about public sites, if I took the time to explain myself 100%, 100% of the time I'd not have enough space! So because of what happened in Germany circa 1938 all LEO are not to be trusted? Some people named anonymous are ignorant a**holes too!I approach "people" first time everytime with trust & respect, then until they break my trust or prove they are not worthy of my respect, they will receive it. To paint anyone from any group with one broad brush stroke is being prejudice & ignorant. And now we know how you fail in life. First responders whether LEO, Fire, EMS, Military have THE hardest jobs in this great nation, & it is almost made unbearable by thankless dolts who denigrate people in these professions. For the sake of this discussion, Storm chasers could fall under this banner, legit chasers just need to be regulated so we will not have dangerous cluster ***** around areas involved in tornadic damage.

I wonder how many people on here have actually met Lanny. He isn't some hot-shot stormchasing jerk. Instead, he is a very humble & compassionate man that has certainly saved many lives through his reports & has pulled many people out of the rubble. He's seen stuff that would make some of you throw-up, like dead people & severely injured people and he keeps going. Why? Because he wants to inform people & keep them safe!!! Also, for all the leo supporters out there, guys like Lanny have radar equipment & weather instruments...police cruisers do not!!!

You SPOTTERS are EDUCATED with the same lame material every year. If you have been to the class for 25 years, every year, then you have wasted 48 hours of your life. So two hours of training makes you an expert? Chasers have to educate themselves to travel thousands of miles to see a tornado. Selling pics and video help to cover the costs. Not to mention it boosts the local economies in po-dunk KS. Chasers also fill the gap that spotters cannot cover. Am I chaser? You're darn right I am. Have I taken pictures of a damaged home? Yes. Have I ever put them online to sell? NO. IF I ever share those pics, it's in private to help educate people of the damage tornadoes can do. Or better yet, who do you think reports that a house has been damaged, so first responders know to respond? Snap into a slim jim people.

You still do it for the thrill and money and I bet you just couldn't wait to brag on this message board about how you saved lives.

yes, I have paid taxes on what little (it's not my main source of income) I make from chasing. We also pay the tax on the food, gas, etc. when visiting your county or town.
