Storms Bring Flooding To North Central Oklahoma

Just south of the Kansas-Oklahoma border, Sunday night's storms dumped nine inches of rain on Grant and Kay counties. Some residents in the Ponca City area are picking up after their homes and properties were left damaged by flash flooding.

Eighty-six year old Emmett Trussell lives on the west side of Ponca City where flooding was the worst. His home was flooded and now his family is working to clean up the mess.

"It was pretty scary. We had to go upstairs. There was no way you could get out. We have a brand new car and we wondered about it floating away," said daughter Pam Lough.

The flood waters have receded, but their depth during the storm is still evident by the mud lines left on the home's siding.

"The water came up approximately six inches from the floor... and went through the whole house," said son Lyles Trussell.

Lyles Trussell says water ran off nearby fields like a rushing river. His sister called to say it was getting into their father's house, but by then it was too late for him to rescue them.

"They said no, you can't get close, even with the truck, so they said just wait. They'd been through it before. It'd go back down and that's what happened. It went back down this morning," he said.

Street flooding in Ponca City has receded but some highways in the area are still closed. Local rivers, including the Salt Fork, have risen several feet above flood stage. Rain in the forecast for the days ahead is expected to bring even more flooding to the area.
