Wichita Police are taking a proactive step in reducing motorcycle accidents and thefts.

The department is handing out flyers for motorcycle safety month. Officials said that as the weather gets warmer, more bikes will be on the road.

“These are things people must do themselves. We can’t do it for them,” Lt. Wanda Parker-Givens said.

Authorities said their goal this year is to reduce motorcycle thefts. Police said they have investigated 21 motorcycle or moped thefts so far this year.

Two people have died in motorcycle-related accidents in 2012, police said. That is the name number of fatalities at the same time last year. Officers worked seven deadly accidents in 2011.
