DMV Closes For System Upgrades

Starting Monday, the Department of Motor Vehicles will be closed for more than a week for a computer system upgrade. The tag office will be open on Monday but will join the DMV in the shutdown starting Tuesday. During the closure, Kansans will not be able to get driver's licenses, vehicle titles or registrations.

The state is replacing computers that date back to the early 1980s. Kansas Department of Revenue spokeswoman Jeannine Koranda says while the closure may be a hassle for some drivers, the upgrade is desperately needed to improve customer service and efficiency.

"Essentially we're moving into the 21st century with our data. The unfortunate thing is it requires a shutdown over the next week while they move 6.8 million records from the old system to the new system," said Koranda.

Drivers who visited the DMV in the week before the shutdown came prepared for a longer than usual wait. Some were pleasantly surprised with new technology that allows customers leave and come back without losing their spot in line.

"My license was set to expire so I came in. It's about a two hour wait, but they have a great text message system that they use and actually they're going a lot faster than I thought they would," said driver Glen Gledhill.

The DMV and tag office will be closed through May 8 and are set to reopen on May 9.
