Dr. John Bardo Named WSU President

Dr. John Bardo has been named the 13th President of Wichita State University. The Kansas Board of Regents announced Bardo during a brief ceremony on the Wichita State campus this morning.

Dr. Bardo was selected from five finalists for the position.

Dr. Bardo started his career at Wichita State, where he was graduate coordinator of the master of urban studies program from 1976 to 1977. He was also chairman of the university's sociology and social work department from 1978 to 1983.

He has also worked at the University of North Florida and Bridgewater State College in Massachusetts.

More recently, Bardo served as chancellor of Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, N.C., from 1995 to 2011. He returned to
the classroom last year as a professor of education.

Outgoing President Donald Beggs announced his retirement last year.

Dr. Bardo will begin his presidency on July 1st.

The Kansas Board of Regents will hold a special meeting followed by a news conference to name the next president of Wichita State University Friday. The meeting will take place at 10:30 a.m. in the Rhatigan Student Center Ballroom on the WSU campus.

The chair of the Kansas Board of Regents, Ed McKechnie of Arcadia, released the following statement concerning the announcement: "One of the most important responsibilities of the Kansas Board of Regents is selecting a university president. I am pleased to announce the Regents will name the next president of Wichita State University on April 27. We look forward to introducing the president to members of the WSU and Wichita communities and to a bright future."

The five candidates are as follow, Glen Cope, Chuck Staben, Lisa Rossbacher, Bjong Wolf Yeigh, and John Bardo.
