Actually, the state makes millions of dollars yearly from inmate labor. Haven't you seen the guys in the red hats out picking up trash, mowing parks and cemetaries, cutting down trees and grass on the highway, or picking up your garbage in the morning? Winfield Correctional Facility alone farms out inmates to El Dorado Lake, the cities of Wichita, Arkansas City, and Winfield, as well as to local Humane Societies and the Kansas Dept. of Transportation.

Those characters will now be on administrated lock down, quite possibly for a long while. But I would agree w/ the comments related to overcrowding. Rehabilitation with convicted criminals needs to be encouraged even at the state level to help deter reoffenders. If that means manual labor w/o pay, so be it!

I worked for the Larned State Hospitol in KS, while working there the State of KS bragged about how many people they had Incarcerated in a four states surrounding Ks. I do not think that is anything to bragg about. Futher State of KS is hard up for room to jail offenders, and is also hard up financially. The KS justice system is something to be desired, Criminal Justice is something that I have an interest in, and I also have a associates degree. As well it is my opinion that the police are soppose to serve the public as the public dollars pay them to do. It is too many times that police officers let this power go there head. Don't get me wrong the individual s that have been talked about in the media should be jailed for there offenses to society. What I am trying to say is that the less violent individuals should be allowed to rehibilitate without the hurassment with local police enforcement. I have lived in Larned, KS as well Wichita, KS and I am now living in Omaha, NE I have seen this everywhere I have been. I find it frustrating, and irritating.

Sometimes they get to use their "funds" to order pizza at EDCF! Now, they have IPODS too! Not sure when they are going to dig a swimming pool for them and have an open bar, but I am sure it is in the works sometime in the next ten years or so!

The prisons are full of non violent drug and other non violent types of offenders. A person would logically conclude that if any inmates had to be housed eleswhere they would take priority over murderers and other violent offenders. I guess there is nothing logical in todays government though.

I would agree with you. They say that once you have been convicted you lose your rights but that is a bunch of junk. They get to watch TV, Movies, play cards, dominoes, sit around and chat like it's a dorm. I don't think they should be kept behind locked doors all day because they are not animals but I do feel we should use them for a lot more manual labor around the state and should not get paid for it. We pay enough for them.

Prisons are for people who are a threat to society. County jails are for people awaiting trial. Once convicted of murder, he should have never been transferred to a less secure facility. If prisons are overcrowded, it's because our judicial system is not harsh enough to deter the crime. Instead of prisoners getting treated like members of Club Med, allowed to watch TV, and socialize on the prison playground-they should be kept in their cell until their release date. It would make the fear of punishment a reality and deter crime.
