Investigators have closed a western Kansas road as emergency crews clear the scene of a plane crash.
The crop duster plane hit tower guy wires near Highway 50, outside of Lakin Monday morning. A witness said it appeared the plane had split into two pieces.
The impact damaged a tower near the road. The Kansas Department of Transportation closed US-50 in Kearny County, approximately three-and-a-half miles east of the junction of US-50 and K-25.
The highway has been closed as a safety precaution, while the damage to the tower is assessed. Traffic is being detoured on county roads east of Lakin.
The pilot, David Burr, 58, of Montrose, Colorado was injured. He was flown to Via Christi Health-St. Francis in Wichita where he is listed in critical condition.

A crop duster pilot has survived a crash, after his plane struck a cell phone tower in western Kansas.
It happened near Lakin around 9:30 a.m. Monday. Authorities said the plane crashed near highway 50 and mile marker 47.
A witness tells KAKE news the plane hit a cell phone tower, then split in two.
The pilot was hurt in the crash, but survived. No names have been released at this time.

A pilot has been injured after a crop duster crash in western Kansas.
It happened in Kearny County around 9:30 a.m. Troopers were called to the scene near highway 50 and mile marker 47.
The pilot survived the crash, but an update on the condition is not known at this time.
The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
