Charter School Changing Pregnancy Policy

A Louisiana charter school that kicked pregnant students out of class and required them to be home-schooled is changing its policy.

Delhi Charter School board chairman Albert Christman said Wednesday that officials didn't know the policy was illegal and are changing it. The American Civil Liberties Union had threatened to sue over the policy, claiming it violated Title IX of the 1972 federal education law. That's the part that requires equal opportunities for both sexes.

The policy at Delhi Charter School in northeast Louisiana required students who were suspected of being pregnant to take a pregnancy test. If they refused, or tested positive, they had to be home-schooled.

Delhi Charter has about 600 students in kindergarten through 12th grade.
