Teens Spend Summer Volunteering At Wichita Hospital

Summer vacation is well underway for teenagers all across Kansas. While most plan use the time off school to relax, some ambitious teens are spending their break at Wesley Medical Center. In the process, they might even discover what they want to do with the rest of their lives.

More than 90 high school students are cutting into their summer leisure time by volunteering at Wesley. Students will work in 30 different departments around the hospital, doing everything from delivering flowers to escorting patients in wheelchairs.

This is Aryon Lewallen's second year volunteering at Wesley. He says he first signed up because it was an easy way to get community service credit to graduate. Now, after helping patients and working with the staff at Wesley, he says volunteering is now something he loves to do.

"It's a great experience. It's a great way to get involved with your community and meet people and I just really like the experience," said Lewallen.

Wesley organizers say they hope that experience is something the teen volunteers can use to help decide their future careers.
