U.S. Won't Negotiate With Al-Qaida On Aid Worker

The White House says the Obama administration does not and will not negotiate with al-Qaida even though it is concerned about the safety and well-being of a 70-year-old American aid worker kidnapped in Pakistan nine months ago.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said the administration condemns the kidnapping of Warren Weinstein and called for his immediate release.

In a video released by al-Qaida, Weinstein said he would be killed unless President Barack Obama agrees to the group's demands.

Carney said he did not believe the president had seen the video. He said the government would continue to make efforts to have Weinstein released.

A friend and business associate of a Maryland man kidnapped in Pakistan last year says he was grateful to view a video released by al-Qaida that showed Warren Weinstein alive and apparently in good health.

Mike Redwood of Somerset, England, tells The Associated Press that he watched the video Monday morning. He says Weinstein is "more capable of withstanding these circumstances" than anybody else he knows. But Redwood says it's still depressing to see Weinstein in captivity.

Redwood says Weinstein spoke in "measured tones" that indicated he knows what he's doing.

Weinstein lives in Rockville, Md., and works for J.E. Austin Associates Inc., an international-development firm based in Arlington, Va.
