Local Doctor Killed In Hit And Run Accident

UPDATE: Friday, April 20, 2012

A local pediatrician was killed in a hit and run accident between Thursday night and early Friday morning.

Sedgwick County investigators identified the victim as Dr. W. Howard Whiteside, 65.

The driver involved in the deadly hit and run has come forward.

Sedgwick County investigators said a man who was driving the vehicle contacted authorities this morning. He is being interviewed by detectives.

According to Capt. Annette Haga of the Sedgwick County Sherrif's Office, Dr. Whiteside went on a jog around 10 p.m. Thursday. His wife woke up around 1 a.m. Friday and noticed her husband was missing.

Kechi Police found the body in a ditch west of 61st Street North and Oliver about 2:30 a.m. Friday. Authorities said he appeared to have been struck by a vehicle.

Today, his friends and colleagues mourn the loss of the doctor.

"He was an avid runner, avid exerciser. He ran in all of the marathons," said Carolyn James, who worked with Dr. Whiteside for 25 years. "He was a volunteer. He loved working with kids. He loved his patients. He had a lot of special needs patients that he spent hours with, not just the patient, but the whole family."
