Kansas Democrats are about to be without an announced candidate in the governor's race again.
The Topeka Capital-Journal reported Sunday that Herbert West of the northeast Kansas town of Paola plans to make his departure official Monday. West had already dropped out of the race once before re-entering.
The high school dropout lives on Social Security and Medicare and had been largely ignored by party officials. Even so, he had used his campaign to make the case that government no longer pays attention to common folks.
With Rep. U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback in the race, Democrats have
struggled to find a nominee.
Party leaders had supported former pharmaceutical company
executive Tom Wiggans, but he dropped out. State Sen. Tom Holland, a Democrat from Baldwin City, is expected to announce his candidacy soon.
