It happened in the 400 block of south Laura Thursday morning. Police say the first time was around 7:15. Officers took the children back to their home, but around 11 o'clock that same morning, neighbors saw the kids on the street again.

We found the kids' father home.

"I work second shift," he told us. "They figured out how to unlock the chain. We took care of that problem."

That's all he would say before asking us to leave. Police tell KAKE News the first time someone called officers to report the 3 year-old boy and 4 year-old girl wandering in the area was around 7:15 Thursday morning. Police took them back home. Then around 11:00, another neighbor spotted the kids knocking on the door of a nearby business.

"They were just in footie pajamas," Karrie Knightley said. She was working in one of the businesses. "I asked them their names and address and they could not tell me."

"These kids were so precious." said Knightley. "They were starving they told me they were thirsty."

She called police, who then went and talked to the kids' parents. This time, taking them to the Wichita Children's Home.

'As the police were taking the kids away," said Knightley, "The little girl walked to me, held her arms out and I hugged her. I told her I loved her, and she said 'can I stay'."
