Police are investigating an incident involving a car at a Northwest Wichita home that sent a three-year-old girl to the hospital.

It happened in the 1800 block of North Brunswick near 21st and Ridge.

Police were alerted at around 12:30 p.m., when the child was brought to the Wesley West ER. Family told hospital staff that the child had been injured when her father was leaving for work.

Initial reports indicated that the child was ran over in a driveway.

"The child was hit on the passenger side of the vehicle. We're not sure if the child got run over by the tire or hit by the side of the vehicle," Sgt. Troy Nedbalek said.

Police say there are several witnesses helping to fill in the details of what happened. One of the witnesses tell KAKE News the little girl was screaming after the accident and that she had visible bruises to her head and ankles.

Police say, based on what they know so far, nobody meant for this to happen.

"All indications are this was an accident and the child wasn't seen at the time and just happened to be hit," Nedbalek said.

The child was transferred to Wesley Medical Center where she was in serious, but stable condition late Sunday.

The incident is still under investigation.
