A utility worker is dead and another was hurt after an incident in Barber County on Thursday.

Yesterday, Barber County emergency crews were dispatched to the report of an electrocution in an area one mile north of Curry Lane on Northstar Road, east-northeast of Medicine Lodge.

They found two men injured. The first, 20-year-old Dakota Holt of Coulee Dam, Washington, was taken to an area hospital where he later died. The other man, 29-year-old Michael A. Rowan of Garden City, was taken to a Medicine Lodge hospital but was later transferred by helicopter to Wichita with serious burns to his face, hands and feet.

Investigators say the Track Utility employees had been setting a pole when the wind came up and twisted it out of the grapple arms of the truck. Both men were holding onto the pole when it fell and hit an electric line above the area where they were working. The pole was secured by a chain, which prevented it from falling to the ground.

The accident remains under investigation, but authorities say no signs of negligence have been found.
