WICHITA, Kan. -- A woman wrecked her car into a power pole causing a fire and nearly 2,000 people to be without power.
It happened on Market street near 25th street on Saturday morning.
A woman crashed her car into a power pole, causing one of the power lines to snap. The power line fell onto a natural gas meter and arched, causing the gas line to catch fire. For a short time, flames could be seen shooting into the air.
Emmanuel Rocha lives two homes down from where the gas fire was. "it was like a bomb, boom," he said, "it was loud."
Rocha's home was adjacent to the power pole, which fell onto a tree on his property.
The woman who crashed her car was injured in the accident and taken to the hospital.
Nearly 1,900 people were without power in Sedgwick County due to the damaged power pole; power has now been restored to most all of those homes.
Market St. is shut down between 25th and 26th streets so crews can fix damaged power pole and natural gas line.
