WICHITA, Kan. — A woman and child were hurt last night after police say a man tried to steal their car and ended up crashing into a house.

It began around 8:40 p.m. Monday in the 1100 block of North Volutsia. A 22-year-old woman was stopped at the intersection when a man jumped into the car through an open window and tried to steal it.

During the struggle, the car crashed into a home in the 1200 block of Volutsia, injuring the woman and her 2-year-old child. The 53-year-old person inside the home wasn't hurt.

The suspect was injured, but managed to run away. Officers soon captured him on Hillside.

Wichita Police Captain Doug Nolte said that before the attempted car theft and crash, the 56-year-old suspect had broken into another home, tried to rob someone of their car keys and had stolen a different car.
