A woman and a young girl were killed early Saturday morning in a Kansas City, Kan., apartment fire.
The fire started around 5:45 a.m. at a complex in the 1800 block of North 76th Drive.
At the scene, firefighters found a woman’s body and a girl around the age of five who had suffered critical burns and smoke inhalation, Deputy Chief Kevin Shirley told KMBC. The child later died at a local hospital.
Officials said the woman was the child's caregiver, but their relation has not been determined.
The fire is believed to have started on the upper floors of the 12-unit complex and was likely accidental. The investigation is ongoing.
The American Red Cross says it's helping 26 people with lodging, food and clothing.
