UPDATE: Police ID bicyclist killed by passing truck

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Kan-- Police have identified the bicyclist who died after being hit by a pickup truck.

Cal Melick, 66, of Lawrence died Wednesday after being hit by a Ford Ranger in the 900 block of North 950 road southwest of Lawrence.

Police say a preliminary investigation indicates the driver of the Ford, 69-year-old Werner W. Anderson of rural Lawrence, was passing another westbound vehicle when he struck Melick.

The driver of the other vehicle being passed has called and spoken with detectives.

The accident is under investigation and once reports are complete, they will be turned over to the district attorney's office.

Northeast Kansas authorities are searching for witnesses to an accident that killed a bicyclist. The accident happened this afternoon at 12:30 in Douglas County, on N 950 Road.

Investigators said it appears the driver of a car was passing a westbound vehicle when he struck the bicyclist who was riding east.

The name of the bicyclist has not been released.

Investigators want to speak to the driver of the vehicle that was being passed. The driver can contact investigators at (785) 841-0007.
