WICHITA, Kan. — The blast of cold air has arrived in Kansas.
The official low in Wichita occurred at 6:25am when the temperature dipped to -5°. Wind chill values through the morning have ranged from -15° to -20°.
The last time Wichita saw temperatures this cold was February 10, 2011 when the mercury dropped to -17°. The record low for Wichita stands at -22°, set on February 12, 1899.
Dodge City dropped to -11 at 5:00 a.m. That's the coldest reading since 1989.
Many school districts have called off or delayed classes today. Wichita public schools will be in session, although some students who ride the bus may face delays.
KAKE Meteorologist Frank Waugh said today should be the coldest weather of the week.
