Wichita, Kan. -- A fire Sunday kills two of Jana Reeder's dogs while she was just minutes away trying to rescue someone else's dog.
Reeder hopes to turn her tragic loss into a triumph.
Tripod is the name of this pit bull-lab mix terrier Jana and her friends with the group "K-9 Karma, Inc." rescued. Why Tripod? Because a damaged front leg will be amputated.
But Reeder gets a call her house is on fire during the rescue. Now the inside of her east Wichita home is a firry wreck. Firefighters believe the fire started in the kitchen.
Reeder says, "we believe it was up on the stove. It's possible one of the puppies jumped up on there. Sometimes they jump up on the counter looking for food."
Reeder had dogs the "K-9 Karma Animal Advocates, Inc.." were trying to find foster homes for. Five got out through this doggie door. But three hid in a bedroom proving fatal for two of them.
She says, "A lot of times dogs are like children, especially the younger ones, and they run and hide during a fire."
Firefighters were able to resuscitate this dog named Miki, something Reeder says she's thankful for.
Now this loss motivates the rescuers to fight even harder for Tripod.
"That's what I'm trying to focus on now is that there's got to be a good that comes out of this."
She's hoping people will donate to "K-9 Karma Animal Advocates, Inc." To help, click here.
