Wichita children may have fewer places to beat the heat this summer.
The Wichita Parks Department is recommending that the Edgemoor and Country Acres swimming pools remain closed.
Edgemoor Pool is located at 5811 E. 9th. Country Acres is at 705 N. Country Acres. The City of Wichita has 11 outdoor pools and five interactive water fountains.
A study conducted by a national pool design and construction firm showed both pools were losing inches of water every night last season. Some nights the pools lost up to a foot of water.
Park and Recreation Director Doug Kupper said the department will provide affected customers with discounted entry fees and shuttle rides to other municipal pools. Department officials will meet with neighborhood associations, parents and others in the affected areas to determine alternative swimming options and other assistance. The department will release more information later.
The Parks Department is recommending money saved from keeping the pools closed could be used for a comprehensive
aquatics study of the city's needs.
