Elected city leaders spent thousands of tax dollars on a trip to the nation's capital.

The mayor and each member of the Wichita city council except for Jeff Longwell went to Washington D.C. last month for the National League of Cities Conference. Three of the council members, Roger Smith, Paul Gray and Sue Schlapp are considered lame ducks. They will be off the council in a week.

KAKE News has obtained the travel expenses and discovered those three spent a total of almost $8,000 in tax payer money for the conference, begging the question, should they have gone?

"This is part of my job, to bring something more. If i didn't go I wouldn't know," said Smith. He went on to say that he is planning on continuing public service, and he will take what he learned in DC and use it in the future.

"They are the elected officials until the day the citizens tell them their time is up, and they are replaced by someone else," said Mayor Carl Brewer.

Paul Gray did not return our calls and Sue Schlapp was not available.
