Wichita, Kan. -- Wichita finds itself at the top of an unenviable list.
'Realty Trac'-- a leading national source on real estate data -- reporting Wichita has the highest rate of abandoned homes.
Realty Trac finds half of the Wichita houses in foreclosure wind up being abandoned. This stat is getting some national media attention. But Wichita State University's Real Estate Professor Dr. Stan Longhofer says it doesn't tell the whole story.
Lonhofer says, "Wichita's housing market is in much better shape than what the national averages would reflect. Our foreclosure rate is a much lower foreclosure rate than the national rate."
"So what this is looking at is it's asking of the homes that are in foreclosure, how many of them are abandoned?"
In the second quarter of this year Wichita had 301 houses in foreclosure. About half -- 49% -- were abandoned properties.
He says those houses are typically in already distressed neighborhoods.
Longhofer says Wichita's overall real estate market is improving.
"It's a really, really tight market out there. I think we have a very solid housing market right now."
