Wichita man falls for prize money scam

Stay up-to-date with KAKE News:

WICHITA -- A Wichita man says he was scammed out of $5,000 this week, and it all started with what looked like a check for thousands of dollars.

It all starts with a letter stating the recipient has won a nearly $100,000 prize.

Darwin Buck says the letter looks legitimate. "It looks like a viable check, from State Farm, a name you recognize pretty easily."

But the twist, according to the Better Business Bureau, is that the scammers have you deposit the check, then have you send them a check for $3,600 for Canadian taxes. But the deposited check bounces.

Darwin Buck didn't fall for it, but an 81-year-old Wichita man did, and lost $5,000.
