A woman is hospitalized in critical condition after an apparent beating and sexual assault in north Wichita.
Shortly before 11 p.m. last night, an apartment resident in the 600 block of North Broadway heard screaming coming from the apartment below. She knocked on the door and a man without pants answered. Behind the man, she could see a woman lying naked on the floor with injuries to her head and face.
The witness quickly left and called 911. When she returned to the apartment, the man was gone and she tried to help the injured woman. The witness said the suspect then returned and tried to kick the door in, but was unsuccessful. Another witness reported seeing the man leaving on a bike.
The 59-year-old victim was taken to a local hospital in critical condition. Police say she had black eyes, was bleeding from the mouth and had a possible facial fracture.
The suspect is described as a black male in his 30s, about 6 feet tall and weighs approximately 160 pounds. He was last seen wearing a blue shirt, dark pants and a black hat. He's facing charges of sexual battery and aggravated battery.
Anyone with information is asked to call police.
