Wichita, Kan. -- The second year of the city of Wichita's rebate plan for water-saving devices and equipment starts Tuesday.

This year's plan, however, is retroactive to Jan. 1. That means if you purchased an approved item since the first of the year, you can apply for a rebate.

Last month, the City Council approved $450,000 for the rebate program, following up last year's initial effort that city officials say resulted in saving 250,000 gallons of water daily.

This year's plan has expanded to include anyone who pays a water bill and three additional items: rain sensors that keep irrigation systems from operating when it's raining, dual flush converters on toilets and urinals.

Last year, only homeowners were eligible for the program. Now businesses and renters can also participate.

Rebate-eligible items that are continued from last year are water-saving dishwashers and washing machines, low-flow toilets, rain barrels and sensors on irrigation systems.

Most items are eligible for $100 rebate. Rain barrels will be reimbursed up to $75 and dual-flush converters up to $50. Receipts are required.

The rebate program will continue through the end of the year or until the money runs out.
