Wichita Police searching for scammer who steals vehicles

WICHITA, Kan. — Wichita Police report someone is posing as a car dealership worker and trying to steal vehicles.

The first incident happened at the USD 259 offices on July 10. Police said a man walked in and told workers he was with a car dealership, and that he needed to pick up a car for a recall. He had a vehicle ID number and the license tag. The man left after being questioned by USD 259 employees.

The following day the man appeared at the American Red Cross office, 707 N. Main. He said he needed to pick up a vehicle that had been recalled, and again had the vehicle ID and tag numbers. The man left with a 2014 Dodge Van with Red Cross logos on it. The van had Kansas license tag 505 GNR.

The man is white, in his 20s and six feet tall. He wore a red and black baseball cap and a safety vest.

Police said if you are approached, ask for the name of the car dealership and ask them to confirm the information.
