Beginning Tuesday, some Wichita police officers will begin issuing a different kind of ticket.
The City of Wichita has acquired 25 e-citation devices that have the ability to scan a driver's license and print a ticket via Bluetooth technology. According to police, a citation can now be issued in two minutes or less - which they say will improve officer safety, as traffic stops won't last as long.
They say the new tech also eliminates issues of tickets being difficult to read due to illegibility, and would prevent some cases from being misclassified and incorrectly set for court. Cases will also be automatically uploaded to a municipal court database.
The city began researching the technology four years ago. About 20 officers will be trainers on the new equipment, which will be beta-tested over the next few weeks. Police expect that all Wichita officers will eventually have one of the devices.
