A Wichita man was sentenced Thursday to 16 years in prison for the 2011 death of a 5-year-old Colorado boy.

It happened on the morning of December 23, 2011 in the 1600 block of Iris Street in Lakewood, Colorado.

Officials say Adam Latham, 24, was visiting friends in Lakewood and was staying in the children’s room. He left his handgun on a box he was using as a nightstand while he and several other adults were in the living room.

The children, ages three, five and six, went to play in their room. One of the children picked up the handgun and was playing with it when they accidentally shot and killed their 5-year-old brother, Rolyn Javier.

Laham pleaded guilty in November to negligent child abuse causing death.

While out on bond waiting to be sentenced, he was arrested three times on drug and gun charges in Kansas and Arkansas.

"As adults we have to protect our children," said District Attorney Peter Weir, "This irresponsible decision to leave a gun within the reach of a child has had terrible consequences for everyone involved. We are very pleased with this sentence."
