A man is in critical condition following a crash in east Wichita.
Wichita Police Lt. Joe Schroeder said it happened around 6:30 p.m. Sunday on Pawnee, between Oliver and Woodlawn. Witnesses tell police they saw a 4-door Honda car travelling westbound on Pawnee, when the driver lost control along the curves in front of Cessna.
Lt. Schroeder says the car crossed into oncoming traffic and struck the turnpike bridge supports, ejecting the 23-year-old driver.
"The driver was ejected and transported to the hospital in extremely critical condition." said Schroeder.
Witnesses reported they were driving 40 to 45 mph and the car passed them at high speed.
"Just based on the damage we are seeing, it's hard to give a speed estimate. However, we do know it would be extreme speed."
There was no damage to the bridge. Pawnee was closed for several hours as the Accident Follow-up Unit investigated.
The driver's name has not been released.
