When fire crews arrived on the scene of a house fire on South Everett late Wednesday night, they knew there was an 18-month-old boy still inside. When they found him, it was too late.

"As much as they analyze it, they can't think of anything else they could have done," said Wichita Fire Captain Stuart Bevis. "That's the case in this instance. It was beyond their power."

Bevis says firefighters keep an eye on each other and watch for signs of grief or trouble. They have a critical incidence stress debriefing team to help anyone who needs help dealing with tragedy.

In July, a child died from injuries she received in a house fire in southeast Wichita. Click here for that story.
