Westar Energy expects it will be Thursday before power is restored to all customers affected by a tornado that struck Wichita Saturday night.
"We located significant additional damage as we were working through some of the hardest hit areas,” Bruce Akin, vice president, power delivery, said. “As people are aware, this was a destructive storm. We are reconstructing lines that serve some areas in addition to the many repairs that are needed to restore power.”
Westar has more than 400 people dedicated to restoring electrical service. By 6 a.m. Tuesday, about 4,500 customers in Sedgwick remained without electricity, down from about 6,000 customers at 5 p.m. Monday. The highest number of customers without power was 26,500 about 11 p.m. Saturday.
Be sure your building is ready to accept power when crews arrive. For some homes and businesses, the storm also damaged the service line that spans between the power pole and the structure. Frequently when this happens, the meter box will pull away from the house. Homeowners and business owners are encouraged to check for damage of this nature and, if the meter box has separated from the structure, to call a licensed electrician.
