There is one more reason for local churches to be on their guard after another church is hit by a scam artist.
Last week, we told you about two east Wichita churches scammed in the same night by a man claiming he needed funeral expenses. Well, another church fell prey to the same scam but by a different con artist last Wednesday.
A woman showed up at Westside Church of God last Wednesday, as a women's bible study group was meeting. The woman said her daughter had just died and she couldn't afford the funeral.
"Course it tugged at everybody's heart that she had lost a child and could not bury her properly,” Barbara Owens said.
Several of the parishioners gave the woman money. She got away with about $100 in cash.
"I was very angry because there are people who really need the money what if somebody comes to me again I'm sorry I just won't give it to them."
Police say the best thing churches can do is never give strangers cash. Offer them food or clothing or point them in the direction of a charity that can help.
