WICHITA, Kan. -- A unique atmospheric phenomenon was visible Wednesday morning across KAKEland.
The scientific term is parhelion, but it's more commonly known as a sun dog. Clear skies across KAKEland allowed for two sun dogs to be visible for about an hour Wednesday morning.
Sun dogs are created when sunlight is refracted through horizontal hexagon ice crystals. While sun dogs are visible all year long, very cold conditions contribute to their formation.
