A 12 inch water main pipe in Old Town Wichita exploded early Wednesday, raining highly pressurized water straight into a hotel guest room. Repair crews are trying to repair the water main break by evening Wednesday.

The 12 inch line burst at about 3:30 a.m. under Mosley between 2nd and 3rd Streets.

Approximately five buildings, including a foundry, are without power. The Courtyard Marriott at Old Town has water, but no power due to flooding in the basement.

"It started spraying water at such a force that it threw rocks and debris into one of the guest room windows," said Marriott VP of Operations Lea Firestone. "It broke the window and just started pouring into the hotel and flooded the lower level of the hotel and part of the first floor, as well."

The break is only affecting buildings on Mosley, and does not include any homes. Mosley is shut down to traffic between 2nd and 3rd.

The cause of the break has yet to be determined, but a Asst. Director of Public Works, Joe Pajor, said the cast iron pipe that burst was installed in 1911, and age could be a factor. Pajor believes an "excursion" happened at the main pumping station, which caused more pressure than normal to enter the pipeline system.
