WICHITA, Kan. -- UPDATE: Police cars have become a common sight in a south Wichita neighborhood near Lincoln and Wichita.
"Well lately between working at this house and that house I've seen cops run through the area quite a bit,” local contractor Kevin Medlin said.
Officers have worked nearly two dozen burglaries there in the last month. When they're not doing that, they've been cruising the neighborhood hoping to catch the thief red handed and that is almost exactly what happened.
"It just happened to happen at the right time. Bad guy was in the wrong place and we were in the right place,” Lt. Dennis Wilson said.
Expect in this case, Javier Navaros says he's the one who caught the guy in the act.
"Well he had a TV in his hands running,” Javier Navaros said.
Navaros says he spotted the man running with a flat screen TV while he was driving back to his hous. He says he's seen him, even chased him before. It was about two weeks ago, when the guy broke into his neighbor's house.
"Well I heard somebody break a window so I came out and saw him inside of the house. He ran out of the front door so I chased him,” Navaros said.
The thief got away that time, so this time Navaros followed him in his car.
"Then other citizens called in to 911 to report that the citizen was chasing the suspect,” Lt. Wilson said.
Officers were already in the neighborhood patrolling so it didn't take them long to find the man. He was hiding in a crawl space at a house in the 900 block of Market.
Investigators believe they'll be able to link the man they caught Wednesday to some, if not all of the burglaries committed recently in the neighborhood.
A burglary suspect is in custody after being chased by a resident of a south Wichita neighborhood.
Around 12:40 this afternoon, someone who lives in the 1200 block of South Wichita Street called 911 saying a man carrying a TV was running down the street - and was being chased by another. During the, the man dropped the TV.
Officers were already nearby, on increased patrols because of a recent spike in burglaries. They chased the man briefly on foot, but lost sight of him.
About half an hour later, police found the suspect hiding in a crawl space in the 900 block of South Market.
The suspect, in his 50s, was arrested. While searching him, officers also found items they believe came from a separate theft.
Last week, KAKE News covered the increase in burglaries in the same area near the Lincoln Street Bridge. Officers are now trying to determine if this suspect is also connected to those cases. Read more on that story by clicking the link below:
