A local gang member is suspected of several robberies over the past few weeks, and his victims say it could have been prevented if he was in jail. Instead, he slipped out of an unguarded hospital room after being shot over a month ago.

Police had been looking for 22-year-old Devontez Morrison, a documented gang member, for more than a month. He slipped out of a Wichita hospital after being shot in a gang-related shooting.

"He put the gun to my boyfriend's chest and said to give him everything he had and if we told anyone, he was going to come back and kill us."

Afraid for her life, the woman asked that we not identify her. She said it was Morrison who came into her home and robbed her family at gunpoint.

"It was traumatizing," she said. "We 're still going through it, still not comfortable at home."

Police made the decision not to place a guard at Morrison's hospital room. Since he left the hospital, Morrison is suspected of robbing one business and two homes at gunpoint.

"Every case has to be evaluated whether we can afford it, whether the crime is serious enough that we need to put someone on them," said Wichita police Lt. Doug Nolte.

For one of the victims, she says her life has been changed forever.

"If he would have been in jail, it wouldn't have happened."

"We have to make choices," Nolte said. "Unfortunately there were more victims but fortunately no one was hurt."

Morrison has since been arrested and is currently being held on $750,000 bond.
