Lincoln Pius X High School held an assembly Tuesday morning to welcome back 17-year-old Ellen Kopetzky, who was stabbed in a women's bathroom at the school last week.
Students welcomed back the senior at Pius with an opening prayer. Kopetzky was greeted with hugs and applause from fellow students and faculty before she addressed the school.
She mentioned while the ordeal went by quickly for her, she gave credit to students who waited in fear for hours. Kopetzky also said that while the school may never understand why the stabbing happened, they can continue to pray for the safety of the student body.
According to police, Kopetzky was stabbed by 16-year-old Sarah Piccolo in the women's bathroom at Pius X High School on Oct. 7.
Police say Piccolo used a survival knife with an eight-inch blade, similar to a hunting knife, in the assault. Police say she then used a hammer to hit Kopetzky twice in the back of the head.
They say Kopetzky had cuts to her face near her mouth and chin. She underwent surgery at Bryan West to treat multiple injuries.
Piccolo was found and arrested in Woodson County, Kansas, last Tuesday. Piccolo appeared before a Lancaster County judge Friday afternoon. She was charged with first degree assault and use of a weapon to commit a felony.
She is expected back in court on Oct. 31, 2013.
Superintendent Father Jim Meysenburg said it's been a long journey for students and families involved. Father Meysenburg said he's happy to see Kopetzky back at school so quickly, and hopes she can enjoy the rest of her senior year in peace.
