Valley Center 911 dispatchers will soon be out of a job.

The city council voted to eliminate its local dispatch center to save money. The city was facing a budget shortfall and a huge tax increase without the cut.

Three full-time and 8 part-time employees will be laid off in January. All 911 calls will go through Sedgwick County's dispatch center.

"To the citizens, they will notice very little change," said Joel Pile, city administrator. "Still calling 911 and get emergency in a very timely manner."'

Sedgwick County has been handling Derby and Haysville 911 since last year. The county says it has plenty of dispatchers to take Valley Center calls as well.
