WICHITA, Kan. -- The veterans health care scandal would seem to be extending to Wichita's Dole Medical Center. KAKE news first reported a week ago --- the finding of an unsanctioned waiting list at the local VA for patient care.
Kansas 4th District Representative Mike Pompeo says he's familiar with the local issue of the unsanctioned list discovered at the Dole VA Center.
"We don't know the facts precisely at the Bob Dole Center here in Wichita. So we don't know all the details. We're working through that process. We hope to have answers very, very quickly."
Pompeo says, "We have a pattern of behavior inside the VA where it clearly isn't coincidental we have multiple facilities with multiple lists. Call them unsanctioned. I would call them criminal efforts to deny folks treatment and mislead the public about the status of service out at the Veterans Administration's facilities.. potentially the one in Wichita, Kansas. So we need to get to the bottom of it, certainly at the Bob Dole Center, but all across the country, as well. I'm a veteran too. These are folks who served our country and we need to make sure they get the care they so sacrificed for and so richly deserve."
On Friday President Obama accepted the resignation of VA Secretary Eric Shinseki over the national scandal. On that Pompeo says, "I don't think his departure from the VA even remotely begins to solve the problem but I do think accountability is demanded in a situation this egregious."
"We now know there are concerns at our facility, as well. And they are in keeping with what we're seeing all across the country. So yea, we need to get to the bottom of it at the Bob Dole Center too."
