WICHITA, Kan. — Two Oklahoma residents are dead and a Haysville man was hurt in a crash on the Kansas Turnpike.
It happened around 9:15 p.m. Tuesday just north of the 71st Street/Haysville exit.
According to the Kansas Turnpike Authority, preliminary reports show a Ford F-150 entered the Turnpike at the South Wichita toll plaza on the correct ramp to go northbound. But while on the ramp, the KTA says the truck left the roadway, struck a sign and crossed the grass. The truck re-entered the roadway going southbound in the northbound lanes and hit a Pontiac G6 on the 55th Street Bridge.
Two people in the Pontiac were killed after they hit a guardrail and rolled over. The pickup caught on fire, but fire crews were able to bring that fire under control.
The victims in the car were identified early Wednesday as Lori Uchiyama, 38, of Blackwell, Oklahoma and Elizabeth Goodno, 33, of Ponca City. The pickup driver was 65-year-old Donald Fifer of Haysville.
Northbound lanes of the turnpike were closed after the crash for close to four hours.
The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating, and looking into the possibility that a medical condition contributed to the accident.
