Hays, Kan. -- Rescuers in Hays responded to the Lincoln Draw drainage tunnel on the report of two children being swept away by stormwater.

It happened shortly after 1:30 p.m. Monday near the 19th Street entrance to the tunnel. Fire Chief Gary Brown says one of the children, a 10-year-old was rescued in good condition by firefighters and transported to the Hays Medical Center as a precaution.

The second child, a 14-year-old girl was able to climb out of a storm drain connected to the tunnel on her own and had returned home. She was taken to Hays Medical Center as a precaution.

Hays firefighters are encouraging parents to talk to their children about the dangers of playing in storm water. It can take as little as 6 inches of water to sweep someone off of their feet.

The Ellis County Sheriff's Office, the Kansas Highway Patrol and the City of Hays Public Works and Utilities assisted in the rescue efforts.
