Two men with outstanding warrants are in custody after a high-speed chase in South Wichita.
Sedgwick County Sheriff's Lt. Jason Gill said it began at 11 p.m. Wednesday night right as a deputy left the squad room to begin his shift. The deputy spotted a rental car making a traffic infraction and tried to pull the driver over.
The car took off southbound at a high speed, working its way down Meridian and eventually Broadway. Speeds reached up to 80 mph.
The driver eventually crashed into the ditch at 55th Street South and Minnie. The driver and his passenger were taken into custody at the scene.
Lt. Gill said the driver had multiple warrants in Sedgwick County and Wilson County. The passenger also had warrants and was a fugitive who walked away from the Sedgwick County Work Release program.
Both men admitted to deputies that they had ingested narcotics. They have been taken to the hospital to be evaluated.
No one was hurt in the chase. The sheriff's office is working to determine if the rental car had been stolen.
