Authorities are investigating after a plane crashed Sunday afternoon in Kansas City.
It happened shortly after 3 p.m. at the Charles B. Wheeler Airport in the downtown area. KMBC reports that the plane, with two people on board, crashed into a levee just south of the airport, shortly after take off.
The pilot and passenger, a man and a woman, both died in the crash. Their names have not been released.
A witness reported seeing the plane flying low. The pilot contacted the tower with his concerns just before the plane crashed.
The flight's destination has not been released. FAA records show the plane is registered to Air McRoyal LLC, of Youngstown, Ohio. KMBC reports that the plane originally came to Kansas City from Purdue University on Thursday.
Kansas City Police Chief Darryl Forte tells KMBC that the National Transportation Safety Board will be investigating the crash.
