Authorities have captured a man suspected of killing a Derby mother and stabbing her teenage son Sunday morning.
Police were originally called to a disturbance just before 10 a.m. in the 1400 block of North Nixon Street, near K-15 and 71st Street South. Upon arrival, they found the two victims.
The mother was taken to a Wichita hospital in extremely critical condition where she later died. An official cause of death has yet to be determined, but emergency crews at the scene called it a possible strangulation.
The woman's 15-year-old son is in critical condition with stab wounds to his neck. He has since been treated and released.
"It just make sick to think that somebody could do something like that," neighbor Melissa Wren said.
The victims' names have not been released.
Derby police said others were in the home at the time of the incident. They say no one else was injured but further details were not provided.
Police were looking for Charles Alfred Beck, Jr., as a suspect. Beck was captured Sunday in Missouri, where he reportedly has family.
Police say Beck was friends with the mother. They say he lists the home where this incident happened as his address.
State records show Beck was paroled in 2011 after serving time for Russell County convictions of drug possession, violating a protection from abuse order, and battery on a corrections officer or employee. His parole expired last Wednesday.
"We do consider this individual armed and dangerous," Derby Police Chief Robert Lee said. "Don't take any action into your own hands. Call 911 or call the Derby Police Department."
Neighbors say learning what happened and knowing police have not yet caught the suspect makes them very unnerved.
"It just really scares me," Wren said. "I hope they catch him soon."
A fund has been set up to help the children who survived. The family is also looking for donations of clothes and other items. For more information on how to donate please use the following link: http://www.youcaring.com/memorial-fundraiser/nathan-and-breanna-wellness-fund/84721
