TURON, Kan. -- A Turon man suffered potentially serious injuries after crashing his ATV early Saturday morning.
It happened just after midnight at the intersection of North Burns and East Kansas Street in the Reno County town of Turon.
Sheriff’s Deputy John Orrison said Derick Ballinger had been riding his Suzuki ATV north on Burn and was likely going too fast when trying to turn east onto Kansas Street. He hit a curb, sending him and the ATV airborne.
Ballinger flew about 40 feet and hit the side of a building, Orrison said. The ATV continued airborne for another 30 feet. He was flown to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita for treatment of internal injuries. Reports state he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
Ballinger told EMS personnel he had consumed alcohol prior to the crash. Blood tests are pending.
